Program Spotlight: Graduate Institute

We are currently focused on gaining donor support for the Obermann Graduate Institute on Engagement & the Academy. This year, the Institute celebrated ten years of teaching young scholars and artists how to collaborate with community partners in a way that adds to their scholarship and teaching, as well as benefits the partners' needs. POROI

Directed by Naomi Greyser (Rhetoric, CLAS) and Kembrew McLeod (Communication Studies, CLAS) the Project on Rhetoric of Inquiry (POROI)’s mission is to explore how scholarship and professional discourses are conducted through argument, how paradigms of knowledge are sensitive to social-political contexts, and how the presentation of scholarly and professional findings involves the recognition and negotiation of audiences. In tandem with the UI Lecture Committee, POROI brought the YES MEN to campus. They led a workshop about performance-based activism, advising participants on their own change-making initiatives. They also hosted several POROI Seminars, including with visiting artist -author Lisa Jane Persky and Deirdre Egan (GWSS, CLAS).

Past IDRG Publication

Obermann's 2013 IDRG scholars, Amber Brian (Spanish & Portuguese, CLAS, UI), Bradley Benton (History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies; North Dakota State Univ.), and Pablo Garcia Loaeza (World Languages, Literatures, & Linguistics; West Virginia Univ.) recently published THE NATIVE CONQUISTADOR, their  translation of Alva Ixtlilxochitl’s 17th-century Spanish text, "Account of the Conquest of New Spain," which provides an alternate indigenous view of the fall of Tenochtitlan. The book, published by Penn State University Press (2015), is part of the press's Latin American Originals series, which features primary source texts on colonial Latin America translated into English for accessible, affordable classroom use.

The Op-Ed Project: An Opportunity Made Possible by Our Generous Donors!

Made possible this year by generous donor support, the New York-based Op-Ed Project came to our campus to make space for women and minority faculty members in the world of news opinion pieces. The Op-Ed Project was formed by a group of journalists who were concerned that few women, people of color, and members of other underrepresented groups were being heard in the press. Together, they designed "Write to Change the World” workshops. Faculty members are among the many individuals and groups that have participated in the last decade, including some of our own faculty. This project saw immediate returns with a number of successful and widely read opinion pieces by group members appearing in the LA Times and the Huffington Post.
