The Obermann Graduate Institute on Engagement and the Academy prepares young scholars to work with community partners. In January 2020, we took a year off from offering this program to graduate students and instead worked with a cohort of faculty.
The Faculty Institute on Engagement and the Academy was led by Teresa Mangum, director of the Obermann Center and a professor of GWSS, and Darryl Heller, a visiting professor in GWSS and director of the Civil Rights Heritage Center at Indiana University, South Bend.

Institute members met with potential community partners in a “collaboration fair,” and several people connected with partners who have since visited their classes.
The Institute also visited Dream City, where Fred Newell (below) provided an overview of the organization’s work, educational inequities in our community, and obstacles he has experienced in working across institutions.
